Affectionately described as 'a vision of grandeur and lunacy' this remarkable museum nestling in the hills of Teesdale has to be seen to be believed. Scandal, romance, passion and tragedy weave their way through true life stories of the founders, Josephine and John Bowes. Learn their story and share their dream as you wander round what is, arguably, one of the best fine and decorative art collections in Britain.

There is a surprise waiting around every corner. Wonder at paintings by Goya, Canaletto and many others. Allow your mind to race through time in the archeology and local history galleries. Alternatively, imagine yourself at home surrounded by the opulence of fine furniture from the French 2nd Empire. Costume, textiles and ceramics are in abundance here too. The Piece de resistence of the museum's collection is the life size silver swan automaton that is guaranteed to fascinate and enthrall everyone who sees it.

Location: Barnard Castle, four miles from the village of Bowes on the A66 (Scotch Corner to Penrith Road.
