St. Andrew's Church is set amongst trees on Newgate Street in the centre of Newcastle. The building began in the 12thC was different both in shape and height from the present. The outstanding feature of the original building is the chancel arch with its chevron ornamentation considered one of the finest in the Diocese. The last addition was the South porch in 1726, other additions were the Trinity Chapel, the widened aisles and lengthened chancel and the addition of both trancepts. Noteable features: the Lepers Squint, the choir stalls of Austrian oak, the Giordano painting and the mediaeval font cover, considered by some to be one of the finest in England.
