Another world's first for Tyneside with the tilting mechanism used to open the new Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Pivots on either side of the river tilt the bridge to form a spectacular gateway arch resembling an opening eyelid. The latest addition to the Tyneside skyline was manoeuvred into position on the 20th November 2000. It weighs 800 tonnes, is 164 feet high and the foundations for the piers on either side are sunk over 90 feet into the river bed. The crane that lifted the bridge into place, the Asian Hercules II, is over 250 feet high.
On the 24th May 2001 the 'eye' blinked completely open for the first time, to see pictures click here.
On the 15th, 16th and 17th September 2001 celebrations were held to mark the public opening of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, to see pictures click here.
